Default So I think I might have a short...but where???

Had the bike out riding last night and all is well.

Make a stop, I go to leave and something just aint right.

Put key in switch turn and everything lights up as usual.

Stand bike up off kickstand...hit start button and everything dies...no lights...nothing.

Put bike back on kickstand and lights come back on.

Stand bike back up and hit start...click..click..click(lights flashing) and lights go out.

Put bike back on kickstand and lights come back on.

Left it on the kickstand pressed the start button and it fires right up. Rode it home with no problems.

So....I havent started looking yet as Im not around the bike right now.

My first thought is a battery cable is loose.

Anyone have any other suggestions as to what I should look at??

Bike is a 2000 FXDX.

Battery cable is the first place I'd look. Not just at the battery terminals but where it grounds to the frame. Make sure the battery is fully charged, too. It might be on the way out.
Starter relay is the second thing to check.

check the cable mounts at the battery. had a problem where my tach kepted going up and down and had starting problems. turned out to be a loose cable at the battery. If you have a factory security modual, might be that too. Mine would occasionally leave me stranded. turning the key on and off. finially just switched the TSSM to TSM. (got rid of factory security modual)

Looks like the battery is where my problem is at.

Took the seat off...pressed start and saw a spark where the neg battery terminal and everything dies on the bike. (red circle)

I lowered the battery tray down and pulled the batter away from the frame and the bike starts up every time.

Have to pull the battery out of the bike and look at the terminal wire. (have family in town and havent had the time to get my hands dirty with it.)

Im thinking that it may have rubbed through and exposed the wire and it was touching the frame.

UPDATE 12/12/12

Just as a follow up incase anyone else has this problem.

I found that the screw that holds the Neg cable to the battery had backed out a couple of turns.

Retightened it and covered it with electrical tape.

Will have to check it every couple of 100 miles to make sure I dont have this problem in the future.
