I called to set up my 1000 mile service on my 12 Super Glide. I told the service manager that I would be providing the fluids, Mobil 1 20w50 full synthetic in all holes. He told me that they suggest waiting until 5000 mile service to switch to synthetic, but it was my choice. THIS IS NOT A OIL QUESTION. The question is, has anyone ever had a internal engine problem/leak issue under warranty after you provided the oils for your service, and if they gave you any problems for switching too synthetic at your 1000 mile service? Every new bike I have owned I switched too synthetic at the first service, on my metric bikes the first service is 600 miles, and I've never had any issues with synthetic, but this is my first new Harley, and I don't want to take any chances.
You can service it yourself. save your receipts.
I switched to Amsoil at 500 miles.
1000 miles would be just a bit better to allow for break-in.
I have never been in for service.
Half the fun is learning and doing your own work.
Have you ever and I mean ever seen an engine failure caused by the oil? If it meets the specs it's good to go. Just change it at the recommended intervals and use a quality filter . Wix makes one with a 5 micron spec.

They included the 1000 mile service as part as my purchase. I bought this bike the last day in Sept, no prep, delivery or 1000 mile service charge, or I would be doing the service myself.

I never have, but I can tell the service manager isn't happy with my choice of oils, and if it needs warranty work they will be doing it. The dealer I bought my VROD from said I was riding my VROD too hard and that was causing my front rotors too warp, they did replace them twice though. Thanks for the tip on the oil filter.

Since the 1000 mile service is already paid for, why not just let them change the oil with whatever they want to use then you can change to what you bought at 5,000 miles.
It's not going to hurt or help the bike either way and the service department will be happier with you off their back, this will all lead to better service whether you know it or not.
I switched to full synthetic at my first service. Service manager said it was my choice. I have the service plan, and since its already paid for, I figured why not switch.
