2001 88" issues?
I have a 2001 FXDX with the stock carbed 88" motor.
Just wondering what issues these motors had, I've heard some people say they had the bad cam chain tensioners and some say they were good in 2001.
Timken bearing? Crank?
Then something about the oil pump.
Just looking for some input, I'm new to the twin cams, coming off an Evo. I want to know what to watch out for and what to eventually upgrade as I plan on keeping this one for a while!
It only has 5,000 miles, so I don't need to be too worried about anything yet....do I??

Cam chain tensioners are the issue. They can lead to all sorts of other problems with oil pump. Your bike has the good crank with the Timken bearing. No need to sweat that. Replace with either gear drive cams or the s/e or Andrews upgrade kit. Mine were shot at 32K. Replace inner cam bearings with Torrington b-148's while you are in there. You could just replace the cam shoes which I did once but they only lasted 20K miles.

At only 5K you are good for a while. I would have the tensioner shoes inspected around 20K. At that point they may be getting close to the end of their life, or still have another 10-20K useful life remaining. Just don't allow them to wear through. Replacement options include just replacing the shoes themselves. Upgrading to the hydraulic tensioner that HD went to on the 96 and 103 engines. They offer a kit to do so which includes a higher volume oil pump as well. Or going to an aftermarket gear drive system.
