Default Says 3 quarts, 2 1/2 looks correct

2011 Fxdc, just got the bike. It has 1280 miles, so went to harley and got 5 quarts of full syn. H-d oil and filter- o rings and derby cover gasket.

Drained the engine oil, By judging from the drain pan The engine only seemed to have maybe 2 quarts in it(old oil looked very black). No metal on drainplug magnet. when i was at the Dealer they said it takes 3 quarts, but I put in 2 1/2 started the bike, let run for 2-3 minutes and checked the oil level. Looks to be correct level? Are you supposed to thread the dipstick in to check oil level?

Also changed tranny fluid, Magnetic on plug had some metal shavings stuck on it. Is that normal? Added 1 quart and level looked good.

Tomarrow night I will change the primary fluid.

I have an 08 FXDB and my service manual actually says 2.5 quarts. Not sure if it's different for a 2011 though...

First, you can't get all the oil out (you can but it's a PITA). Second you can't buy a 1/2 a quart. So they tell you 3.

Is the dipstick supposed to be threaded in to check engine oil level?

Was going to get a manual, but dealer didn't have one...and he said they were 60 dollars. Worth it, but man 60 bucks.

According to my factory service manual for 2007, the dipstick should be screwed back in to check the level properly.

Mine doesn't thread in, but must be fully seated to properly check oil level.

Actually it's 2.5 but like said above you can't buy an half so that's why He told you to buy 3

takes 3 qts in dry motor. 2 1/2 on a oil change. yes screw dip stick in all the way. servise manual is worth its weight in gold, if you do your on work. if you look hard enough, you may find a used one. ebay maybe

small amount off shavings is normal

He's right.... 2.5 quarts for a oil change.... 3 quarts for a dry motor.

Get a manual, you won't be sorry!
