Default Is an Oil Filter Adapter really necessary to install an oil cooler?

Hello all. I'm a new member, but I've been reading the forum for years - GREAT STUFF!!

Anyway, I'm planning on installing an oil cooler. (Yes, I've read the threads, but I commute 30 miles to work each day in Phoenix. When the ambient air temp is 110 or above, everything helps.)

Looking at the filter and frame clearance, I'm not sure I need to buy one of those expensive adapters. Seems to me some right angle fittings would leave enough room between the filter mount and the frame to attach the lines.

Any experience or advice?

P.S. I'll get pics of my bike up soon.

I installed an oil cooler on my 01 Dyna, the adaptor made it impossible to use the K&N oil filters so I bought a different setup that replaced the housing that the filter screws into with a built in thermostat. I guess if you don't want a thermostat (my indy does not think I need one either here in South Fla) you could just reroute the oil through the cooler and back to the engine, I would think that after the filter would be best because hot oil is thiner so there should be less of a pressure drop across the filter.

Unfortunately, on the '07 Twin Cam the filter housing is actually part of the case. The only adapters I have found so far are the Jagg offset. As to the thermostat, not sure I'm going to use one. When it gets hot (5 months/year), let it flow. The rest of the time I'll just use a cover.

I use the Jagg thermostat adapter, you could just used the Jagg offset.
Jagg used to make Harleys oil coolers, I don't know if they still do.
Very efficient with low oil pressure loss due to design.
I also use the stainless braided lines with flared fittings.
I had used double hose clamps on the original rubber lines but one blew off and made a good mess.
I almost lost it in the twisties as it popped off.
No more pop off lines.

The Jagg requires the offset oil filter adapter, which is a separate cost. How does the HD unit attach?

BTW, Jagg now offers a fan assisted version.

Has anyone tried using 90 degree fittings directly into the oil filter housing?
