Default Riser to handlebar not a happy couple

OK here's what I'm working on. Installing new handlebars that are 1" at the center (12" chubby outlawz) and 1" risers to wrap around the bars (LA Chopper 1" risers 1.5" tall).

The problem is I can't get the upper raiser to clamp down fully on the handlebar.

1. Verified handlebars are 1" diameter at center.
2. Verified risers are 1" diameter.
3. There is little to no space left for the riser to meet fully with the handlebar.
4. With a mallet and a shirt to protect the upper riser I gave the riser some love taps. No joy.

I don't want to rip down the allen bolt and strip it out in the riser. This isn't rocket science but I thought 1" bars with 1" risers would work.

Any help or suggestions would be appropriated. Thanks.

Did you tighten each side equally? There should be a bit of space left when the bars are secured. The shouldn't touch when it is done.

If it's not that, the risers may be too thick at the top to go in the slot on the bars where it reduces to 1"..

Thanks Mouth for the reply. This is the other side fully ripped down. Is this still too much gap?

Are you sure your new risers aren't 7/8"?

Are the bars solid and not moving? If so, it is good. If not, the risers may be too wide...

Ranger73, I verified the risers at 0.98 inch after powder coating. Checked the bill from JP cycle and they shipped me 1" risers. But threw the package away.

Bars are solid.

Thanks again guys.

I have the exact same setup that you do the same bars and risers... that gap is normal.

The bars should fit right into the risers, top and bottom. The risers when put together (without bars) form an oval. This is where the pressure comes from as you try to force the clamp together. If the bars don't sit into the risers, then one of them is wrong.

Per the instructions for the HD risers I installed, a gap in the rear between the cap and the riser & also a gap in the base of the riser are present when properly installed. It is clearly described in the instructions.
Check a set of risers in the HD website parts catalog that includes downloadable instructions for verification.
