Can I do my own 1000mi maintenance myself with out voiding my warranty? I was told that if I keep all receipts that I'll be OK to do it all myself and keep my warranty... I'd rather not throw money away at the stealership...
The warranty issue would have to be a direct result of improper maintenance. If you are capable of doing your own service buy a manual and do it. I recommend documenting, even over documenting everything. Time stamped receipts, pictures of odometer, items used.
My dealer said its OK but to retain all receipts. We have a points program that records my purchases at the dealer wich should help. I can deal with using the MoCos oil and filters for two years. I would also recomend purchasing the service manual along with proof of purchase of it.

I bought a 2008 Sportster new and did all my own fluid changes, plus followed along in the owner's manual and did all checks and adjustments myself. During the warranty period my rocker cover gaskets started leaking and the dealer repaired with no questions concerning who had been maintaining it. I now have a 2013 Heritage. As of today on my 230 mile ride I now have just over 1,000 miles and plan on doing my own maintenance on this bike also. Youtube is a great resource for learning how to change this, replace that, etc.
Should I buy/ do I have to buy my oil and filters and all from the dealer?
I buy my oil from the auto parts stores (Mobile 1 V-twin 20W- 50). As for the filters, it can't hurt to buy Harley filters. Some filters have bypass valves and or other little things about them that could cause foul play. I would say the couple of dollars of savings buying a non Harley Davidson filter is not worth the risk. Also while your are at Harley getting the oil filter, pick up the gaskets and O-rings needed. Again I like to be safe. Also I would highly recommend getting a torque wrench from Sears or Lowes (Kolbalt lifetime warranty). If your bike is other than a Sportster, your drain plugs require you to tighten bolts (drain plugs) into an aluminum engine block. A torque wrench with help to prevent stripping the drain plugs. On my 13 Heritage I bought a motorcycle jack, torque wrench, oil filter wrench, T handle torx wrenches and spent a total of $250.00.
My local dealers are looking for $350 plus for the 1,000 mile service. So do you have two hours out of your ridding season you can spare to do your own fluid changes with the right tools?
