Default Throw-over saddlebags.. Any good?

Looking to purchase saddlebags for my 2012 super glide custom. Studded preferably. Any comments/recommendations? I have a detachable backrest on, will they still mount right? And with throw overs, does the passenger have to sit on the connecting piece?

With the QD back rest, you wont have any issues if you have the bags outboard of the back rest plates. I have seen some feed the connecting piece between the QD plate and the strut then lace together over the fender, depends on how wide the connecting piece is.

The connecting piece can go over or under the passenger seat. But if you put it under, you WILL eventually have your paint messed up, even putting a soft cloth on the fender first is only gonna delay the inevitable.

my 0.02 cents, If you are looking at throw overs as an economic temporary measure, better to mod them and hard mount on the strut bolts. Better yet spring for a proper set of strut mount bags if you can.

Back when I had a set, I put the connection under the seat. They worked. Only had them on my metric

Thank you for the info, did not think about the paint wear. I will likely go with the hard mounted kind knowing that. I've been looking into the Saddleman brand.

Here is a pic of some Willie and Max Throw overs. I have had them on the bike about a year, and have had some on a sporty for about three years. They have held up real well. On the Sporty they have dulled the paint just a little on the fender, but so far no effects on the WG paint. I'm sure if they are on there long enough they will. I will probably never go with a solo seat, so no problem for me...

I have the HD ones on mine. I have the rigid sissy bar mount though and they lace together under the seat. I have been able to keep any damage to the paint under the seat to a minimum by taking the bags off everytime I wash the bike. Its a labor of love though for me, because I like to apply leather conditioner to the bags and seat while off, and it is a good thing to keep the electrical connections under the seat clean too.

Just for some choices, check:

I mounted my bags on Easy Brackets for those few times I need bags

The Kury generic ones scratched up my rear fender after first use.
