Default Harley Warranty

Does anyone know...

How far can you go with doing your own work, adding accessories yourself,
before the warranty is voided?

Going by what the dealership told me, any work on the engine will do it?

One more question;
Anyone ever heard of someone wrecking the engine by not following the
break in instructions? Just curious.

Thanx

Unless the rules are different for motorcycles you can do any or all of your own work under warranty. Or have an independent shop do the work. Keep good records and all receips and be sure your materials meet dealer specifications ( ex grade of engine oil). The dealer cannot void your warranty unless they can demonstrate that the specific work you did was substandard. The FTC regulates this.

These motors are pretty rugged, but with enough abuse you can destroy anything. I would say that a motor that is properly broken in will last longer and be less likely to have a catastrophic failure that one not broken in well.

Thanks appreciate the responses.
Obviously, following break-in guidelines.
I'm thinking of saving the money on labor and installing pipes, intake and getting a tuner. Seems simple enough unless I'm missing something. This is actually where the dealer said it would void the warranty to do your own engine work.

Do it yourself.
Some shops will not honor the warranty because of what ever.
My shop doesn't care that much.
If the warranty is questionable they call me and tell me to take it off so the rep won't see it.
Normal service, your choice. intake and pipes, your choice.
Tuner that depends on your dealer. I have mine so I can remove it if need be for warranty work.

If you add non-EPA parts it will void the warranty.

I was at my dealership yesterday and asked this exact question when I bought my new wide glide. The guys in service told me that as long as I dont screw with compression and the bike is within its operating limits for temp, compression, and all that then it does not matter what you do. I asked because I told them I plan on pipes, air cleaner, and a tune. They said my warranty would be fine.

Cool, appreciate all the responses. I'll ask the dealer again just to be sure I'm on the same page.
Took a couple days to get back, work a lot.

That is with your home dealership. What happens when you have a problem while on a trip far from your home dealership?
