Default purchase oor not

Hey Everyone

I am looking at purchasing a 1991 Dyna Glide Sturgis edition in probably poor condition. I say poor because needs new paint on all tins, was stored in a garage next to chlorine so most chrome is pitted and has an oil leak coming from what appears to be a cracked head. I have been turning wrenches for years and have restored several old cars even though I have never worked on motorcycles I think this is a challenge I am ready to take on if I can get the price for the right price. I would be disassembling entire bike, send out all chrome, frame and other parts would be sent out to be powder coated. I am still unsure if I would take on the engine myself or have an experienced motorcycle engine guy take care of that for me ( I have rebuilt over 30 car engines gas and diesel ). The bike also has 37,000 miles on it. What would be a fair price for this bike and should I take on this project or just buy a new one. If I do make the purchase I would like input from members on the build (paint colors options, where to purchase items etc...).

Thanks
Marshall

not sure what a good price would be, but I always loved the Sturgis model, personally I would keep the black and restore all the red stripping to keep it looking original as these bikes are not very common, as far as I know they made the Sturgis model twice, the 1980/81 shovel head and the first year Dyna in 1991, in 1992 they came out with the Daytona model

I wouldn't buy it for any price. I've had my share of "fixer uppers" but I don't have the money now. If you do and you like challenges, go for it.

Big different between cosmetic problems and a cracked head. If the head isn't cracked, 37k miles isn't very much so the motor would likely be ok as it is, other than oil leaks. Evo motors are easy to work on, you will get lots of help in the Evo forum here. Without knowing if that head is cracked or not, and without better details (PICTURES!!!) we can't give you a good estimate. So far I'm in the $2k range myself, tops. If the motor is still good, I'd go higher.

If you already have a bike, and want to buy this one as a project, I'd go for it if you can get a good price.

I wouldn't buy it as my primary bike.

This is a great platform for a restoration I agree, 2k max, but Eco parts are easy to come by and the finished product is still modern enough to put miles on if done right.

The Sturgis model is a modern classic and well worthyhe effort.

Just don't skimp on the important stuff and you'll be very happy with the outcome. (Motor, wiring, bearings and bushings )

It's a good bike to flip for a profit too, if you get some good priced swap meet stuff.

Go for it.2k to 2600 depending on what you think Easy motor to work on. 2 things to watch for Paperwork and paperwork. Just make sure its got a clean title and numbers match. As far as a restore job back to original I wouldn't....not worth the time or cash. Do it the way you want. There are no collector HDs out there that were built after 1970 that are worth any kind of big money.Well maybe dust collectors! LOL
