Default oil TYPE, NOT BRAND

Not an oil argument thread, I use my brand, you use yours...

Doing my first (1000mi) service tomorrow... Prolly going synthetic, what weight oil? 25w50? A buddy says he uses the same oil on the whole bike, trans and all... Thoughts? Again, not a brand question...

Hi,

Castrol gtx20w-50, i change at around every 6000kms

I think with new bike you want to do a few extra changes before your next one at 5000miles, who knows, I did a few extras at the start
Thanks

Weight is easy. The book say's 20w50. So I would use 10w30. ( Just Kidding ).

What to use where? Get ready for the debate. My personal opinnion, use the correct oil for the correct hole. Crankcase, Gear and Transmission.

I have used Automotive 15w50 or 20w50... currently 15w50 Napa full syn...don't need all that fancy advertising crap on my bottle...change it 4000-5000 miles $3.99 -$4.99 a quart...Formula Plus in tranny and primary...78000 miles and still going strong...

I tried putting engine oil in all three holes as scamsoil said to do, but the SG didn't like it. So I changed it out and put 20/50 syn in the engine and Belray 85/140 gear oil in the trans, and Belray primary oil in the primary. It runs smoother and shifts easier this way.

I agree!!! I have done the research. AND, my mechanic agrees. I use Mobile 1 V twin 20w50 in the motor. It's full synthetic and can be purchased at Wall Mart for 9 bucks a quart. I use Royal Purple tranny fluid (also synthetic) and Drag specialties primary (petroleum base). if you use synthetic on the clutch it will slip. DO NOT buy into Syn 3. Its crap!!! I change motor oil every 2500 mi. and tranny and primary every 5000.

Default primary oil

I just did a change on my primary oil, I went to the HD shop to get some primary oil and they said to run the same in all 3 holes. 20/50. I put it in the primary and now it seems to grab more on take off's I even killed it trying to take off at a slow rev. I don't know what was in my bike.. this is the first oil change.

is it normal for the 20/50 oil to do that?
will it get better as the oil breaks in?

I am going on a trip in 2 days and will be loaded down...I don't want to kill the SOB on a tight turn take off...I have seen a guy brake a leg by it falling on him..

Got my bike with a hair over 1,000 miles on it and have been using Screamin Eagle full synthetic 20/50 in engine and primary ever since.

In trans I use Spectro 75/140 6 speed platinum gear lube.

Would never use or recommend 20/50 in trans even though manual says its ok.
