Default Question about changing primary oil

When you change the oil in the primary, the manual says to add 32 oz of fluid to through the inspection cover. Since the bike leans that direction on the kickstand, do you have to stand it up level to add the fluid?

Balanced on the kickstand, will the fluid dribble out? I want to know if I can do the whole job without having to stand the bike up straight.

Also, when you clean your air cleaner filter, the book says to replace the gasket. No HD dealer in my area has one, so I would have to order one. Is this mandatory? Do they always need replaced if you are just cleaning the filter?

Thanks in advance.

The easiest thing to do is place a short length of 2x4 under the jiffy stand. That should make it easier to add fluid, and should never overflow when adding 32oz.

Right and if the gasket is in good condition no need to change it.

Check the 0 ring on your drain plug,if it's cracked, change it. Make SURE you have the correct torx size before you remove the primary cover bolts. You don't want to mess up the heads on those bolts.

I think it's time you invest in a Harbor Freight Motorcycle Jack. They help with all sorts of things, this being one of them. Detaling, checking tires, oil changes etc.... If you check out the latest edition of American Iron, you will find a coupon for it for only $60. I may have one I can email you. You can order it on line and have shipped to your door for only $7 shipping. The right tools make the work easier. No I do not work at HF.

Bike should be vertical when adding primary fluid. Fluid should be very close to derby cover opening when full.

No fluid should be just to the bottom of the clutch basket, any more will be too much, cause clutch drag amd make it harder to find neutral.
