They must be since everyone that owns one raves about it. I've never seen a negative comment.
As for doing the "same" job for less, you can get a much cheaper jack, but it will require a mod to work with your Dyna, and you won't be able to climb on top and spin while your bike is in the air.
I chose the Sears Red Jack and Mod for about $110 altogether. It works great for my needs, but I use tie downs and rarely have the bike in the air for more than an hour or so. If you plan on extended work on a jack with lots of center of gravity changes, i.e. removing anything heavier than a wheel, the extra money for J&S or Pitbull is probably worth it.

I have one negative comment. .but it's more a Dyna thing than the jack. I have to keep getting up and down, moving side to side left of bike to right, to line the jack rear rail up with the frame properly when I use it. Wish it was easier. There's a very narrow space to get that rail in. .without hitting the jiffy stand rubber bumper. I'd take the bumper off, but it's a pain to line it back up properly.
