Default Turning the key on and letting it prime..... WTF?

My dealer where I bought my Bike says to when turning the key on wait till the light and primer sound goes off then hit it. well I have the stage 1 and a few other things going on and I have recently learned when you don't wait till the light goes and off it starts way easier.

why is that? anyone know? baffles me. just trying to learn.

Sounds like a little BS to me. My '12 FXDF fires right up with no issues. Turn on the switch and press the start button and it comes to life.

Its just the usual "precautions" that H-D put in their literature. The pump needs time to build up pressure and that ensures that you don't get any low pressure issues upon starting and it keeps the n00bs from going back to the shop with "starting issues"....you'll rarely get any problems by ignoring this but if you had starting probs the first thing the dealership would say is "do you let it prime before starting"....kinda like when IT support ask if you have turned your PC off and restarted it....saves them a lot of time.

What's the big deal? Takes a whopping one second, maybe 1.5.

What does your owners manual say? I know on my wife's 2013 sportster you don't have to wait for the light to go out.

I just bought my fat bob and got the same info. Wait til the light goes out, the fuel pump is priming. Like most said, it probably wont hurt it but its a precaution.

+1

If that 1.5 seconds is the difference between you being on time versus late, then you should have left the house 1.5 seconds sooner.

I wait for the light to go out, it just takes a few seconds.

This is actually the recommended procedure for every fuel injected vehicle. My brother in law used to train GM mechanics, and he told me a long time ago to put the key in the on position, but wait to engage the starter, to give the fuel pump time to prime. I usually don't do that on the newer cars, but I do usually do that on my bike. Gives me time to make sure I have the jiffy stand up, and have wheels in correct position. A truly Zen moment.

I turn the switch on and hit start. On my bike it starts better that way.
