I can't remember where I originally saw this, and I couldn't find an existing thread, so I thought I'd post a new one. I did this same thing on my Nightster, and it may also work on the Wide Glide. I already had all the nuts, bolts, and washers, so this didn't cost me a thing.
With the plate removed, you can see the stock carriage bolt. There's a flange nut on the back. Remove these and store for safe keeping. Attachment 623944
The dealer used these bolts and square nuts to attach my drive out tags. I used them to reattach the plastic piece that was removed during the last step. Attachment 623945
And here it is all done. The plate was installed using stainless steel hex bolts, washers, and nyloc nuts. Attachment 623946

I always had my plate folded in knowing full well that it was illegal to do so. It just looked better. Well it finally caught up with me. I got pulled over by a cop, a cop on a H A R L E Y- D A V I D S O N. No ticket, just needed to have the plate displayed properly. I was now officially warned. I didn't particularly care for the look of it. Thanks to this thread revival I've got a new look. I just used the existing bolts. The original center bolt and the plate bolts keep it so it won't move. What a great cheap mod.
Now i just need to find someone willing to part with their stock side mount set up. I have an 05 FXDC so my plate was above the tail light. I'm using a cheap side mount for now until I can get this set up.
