Nothing against chrome; I like a lot of chrome dipped bikes. At the same time, I like to embrace some current styles.
Also, as an engineer, I recognize that chrome had two practical functions and one aesthetic. Chrome was originally used on mechanisms to either protect surfaces from corrosion or as a hard coating to reduce wear. The aesthetic appeal came later when someone figured out how to polish the stuff.
In today's engineering environment, powder coat, in most applications, works as well or better than chrome as a corrosion inhibitor. Modern alloys, modern lubricants and controlled tolerances reduce the need for chrome as a wear surface (although it's still a damn good wear surface.)
It seems to me that non-chrome aesthetic-alternatives are a natural progression.
