Default Project Bike Question/dilemna

I´m considering buying a 1997 Dyna that has been disassembled and in the process of being rebuilt after a wreck/fire. It looks good and intriguing. I´m not looking for a steal on a bike but rather the joy of rebuilding and tinkering.

The big x-factor is the engine. It is disassembled. Not sure if I should but the bike and just put it back together OR get the engine bored and rebuilt OR buy another assembled engine OR punt on the whole project. I was a bit freaked by the rough price of 3,500 to rebuild what I already have.
;
Any counsel is greatly appreciated.

Brian

The motor is your biggest x-factor. A rebuild by a reputable guy, like Pete Hill, for example, is going to run you $1800 +/- and several weeks. Then you got to factor in if the frame is ok or if another is needed, plus the wheels, tires, battery, wiring etc. (You did say wreck/fire, that's where this all comes in. Assume that all the parts will not be there, so you've got those to replace, and probably half of what is there. If $$$ is a big factor, rebuild what you got. That being said, there's nothing like the satisfaction of "I did it myself". I take a great deal of pride in the ones I've built and rebuilt.

You lost me at fire...

Walk away.

Why is the engine apart?
Is the title clear or salvage?
Too much unknown.

Assume you are buying the bike for the frame and vin# only.
Offer accordingly. ($3500 isn't even in the ballpark)
If the title is tattooed, cut your offer in half.

Sounds more like a parts bike than something someone would want to rebuild

I think I would approach a basket-case like I would a hot-rod build......build a new motor. The whole project is only as good as the parts. You can do a lot with paint and metal work, but a project needs a strong motor.

If you are freaked out by $3500 then you need to walk away from this project!

It really depends on what your over all plans are.
Wrecked and burned? Personally I would not use a bike of this nature for a build. A savage title will kill any of the resale. A complete build can and will get costly.
keeping the engine in it's original state okay if it is in good running condition.
It would not be good to rebuild it to your liking and the engine craps out.
Take a serious look at what will be evolved in the build first. Then you can see if this is the bike you want to do this with.
Years ago this is all I could afford so I could ride. There is nothing wrong with it.

not much worse for a vehicle than fire damage.
