Default Suspension help please

I am looking to make my Lowrider ride a little more comfortably. I ride to work everyday and put at least 300 miles on every weekend and of course one serious road trip on vacation. The roads here in Staten Island Ny are brutal. The bumps and potholes are killing my elbows and shoulders not to mention my bike. I considered trading up to a Softail, but I would rather work with what I have. I would like some advise on air shocks and modifications to the forks. I realize you have to spend to get what you want, but I don't want to break the bank. The forum has always been my go to source for good advise. Thanks in advance

Roads up there are horrible. I recommend an adventure bike for a daily driver.

your roads can't possibly be worse than the roads here, where we have a three month road construction/repair season instead of summer.
After I put some suspension under my lowrider its a diff bike. It soaks the bumps up like a dirt bike now.
I used some FXDX shocks on the rear.(can't say enuf good about them)
In the 39mm front I put racetech springs, valves and homemade preload adjusters. PVC couplings cut to the right length would work too for the preload.

Thanks for your replies, I probably should have mentioned that I have a 49mm front end.

Riccor Intimators for the forks. There has been a recent thread on them. They are awesome. I run Progressive 412s on the rear. They are a great upgrade for the money, but the more you spend, the better you get. In my opinion a Softail is not trading up, that's going backwards.
