Default Starter ring gear

I have an 03 Lowrider and the pinion gear is shot. There are 2 teeth completely gone. It needs to be replaced but my concern is the starter ring gear. There are 3-4 teeth that are worn down, the rest of the teeth look fine. I can not find any wear limits anywhere in the manual. According to Harley you have to replace the clutch shell which is $4oo. I really just want to replace the pinion gear but if it will cause more damage I will replace the starter ring. Any input will be appreciated.

You know the answer dude. If it were me and I was in there I would replace any of it looking worn. If the gears don't mesh good its going to cause wear on any new parts and tear up more crap.

You don`t have to replace the clutch shell, just replace the ring gear. There are several aftermarket ring and pinion gear sets available.

Just do a Google search for Harley starter ring and pinion gear set.

I would (and have) replace the ring gear with a quality aftermarket piece, but I wouldn't change the ratio...some may urge you to...if you do you will be restricted to aftermarket only if you tour and need repair...

Are you talking about the ring gear on the clutch basket? Easy enough to replace just that for much less than 400 and the aftermarket has stronger alternatives.

They are bolt on items, if you trash one on the road, you are not not forced to use the same ratio, you use whatever ratio ring and pinion set is available.

Been doing some more research and after really looking at the ring I just wouldnt feel comfortable keeping it in there. From what I've seen I have to pull the compensator and the clutch assembly. Then drill out the rivets on the ring, bolt the new ring on and throw it all back together. I think I can handle that.

You can pull the clutch basket without pulling the compensator. You can also reuse the primary gasket.

If you manage to get the clutch off without removing the compensator (unlikely), and cannot get the clutch back on, you will have a tough time loosening the compensator nut...

Don`t attempt pulling the clutch shell assembly without removing the compensator. Just do it the right way.
