Default Shifter shaft seal 2010 dyna

Hi,

Have leak at inner primary seal so in the process i am replacing the shifter shaft seal

shifter shaft broke up into pieces on removal with a pick, very difficult to get all of it out, could you run a bit of sandpaper in the area to clean up or just wipe with acetone or something and insert new seal?

What about using a bit of silicone once seal is re-installed?

Thanks
Mirrmu

This is a tricky seal to replace because it tears very easily upon replacement. I used some silicone once and it helped. I also put a small bead around all inner primary bolts to keep them from leaking too.

hi,

this is the new and old inner primary seal, 33000kms on the fxdwg:

mainshaft, i measured the race and looks like its within spec, the bearing in inner primary rolls well:

shifter shaft area after I have cleaned up as much as I can, it was very small what was left and wedged right in there, amazed it wasnt leaking:

new harley shifter shaft seal, looks like made by NGK, will check which way it gets installed:

just couldnt get a good photo of the other side of the shifter shaft seal:

got new primary to motor gasket and 5 fasteners, it was very evident the inner primary seal was leaking once i got primary off

thanks

So which seal is leaking. .inner primary or the shifter shaft? Garter spring side of seal always faces the oil. So if shifter shaft seal, the garter spring side faces the transmission. Likewise the inner primary seal garter spring faces the inner primary. If you have to replace the shifter shaft seal be very. .very careful with how you approach it. A pick will likely gouge the shifter or the bore the seal goes into causing more problems. I'll find a pic of the tool I saw someone fab up.

Edit: Tool for shifter shaft seal

Hi,

I am replacing both seals

The inner primary seal was leaking

I was careful picking the shifter shaft seal out but a bit of residue of seal still there

Edit: just seen your post on the other inner primary leak thread so i will have a look around the main shift a bit more

Thanks
Mirrmu
