Default Cotter pin.....Help....rather be safe then sorry

I tried to find some kind of description on how to install/bend the cotter pin for the rear axle nut but couldn't find what I was looking for, I ordered a new nut and pin and just wanna get someone's advice or tips on the proper way to install it, I'd rather be safe then sorry

The axle is installed and I put 60ft lbs of torque on it, then slightly adjusted the nut to align the hole....now can anyone just tell me the proper way to install this pin and I'll be golden, thanks guys

Push the pin through the hole until it stops. Bend the ends that stick through the hole backward in opposite directions.

This is how i have been doing it for ten years on fighters jets.

This explains a lot. You want to install it so the nut can not spin in anyways. The longer potion of the cotter pin goes over the top at least over half the nut. Cut it and take a hammer and tap it down just slightly. Next on the smaller end, cut the cotter pin so it will bend and cover the width of the nut. When that is done, take pliers and pull real hard so that the round end pulls against the nut. Now bend the small potion against the nut and down on it. Take the hammer and hit it flush against the nut, or use a copper punch to do so. Now go back to the long side of the pin and hammer it down against the top of the nut. When all is done it should look like the one in the picture from the link.
