Default S&S 583 low numbers?

Could use some advice, folks. Had a local indie install this cam: S&S 583 with new push rods and tappets; running a Vance& Hines naked vo2 with Bassani 13121J http://www.bassani.com/part/13121J. Dyno tune with a TTS mastertune shows best run at 79 HP 95 Torque ( with the air cleaner off) anther run at 75 HP 90 Torque. Seems barely better than a good stage 1, and feels only a little stronger than it did before work. What do you folks think? I called S&S tech line and they said sounded like oil sumping robbing power, will be checking this out on the 'morrow.

Personally, if a S&S tech told me it might be oil sumping I would trying to read every thread I could find on that and check it out. I know there is a relatively easy way to check, just cannot remember the exact way, maybe someone will jump in with how to do it. If not post this question in the Tech Engine Oil areas.

What size motor? Can you post a sheet? I hope 96". Either way that's no better if not worse than a good stage 1. That's a very lame cam imo, never seen it do anything impressive, but I'd still expect better than that, at least 100ft lbs. If it's making 80hp I doubt it's sumping. I don't understand how that air cleaner could be robbing 5hp on an 80hp motor.

Have you had any head work done to improve the flow characteristics of the motor?

I have a similar setup to yours and get a couple more hp than what you are. I'm very happy with the power and performance of my bike. It pulls hard and the dyno #'s are inline with a few others friends bikes that have the same/similar setup as mine does so i know it's setup and running correctly. It runs far too good not to be.

Yah the 48 is a good bolt on and I have also seen the new release HP103 cam (575 lift) higher rpm from S&S but not sure of the exact specs on it.

Edit: thought the 583 would do much better than that for all the money involved in the cam upgrade.

Using cams that are much larger than stock with no porting work is shooting yourself in the foot. You move the entire powerband up in the RPM range, then where they should come alive they fall flat because the ports choke off the flow.

I didnt realize you could even use 583 lift cams on stock valve springs, I thought the stock springs bound at anything over 550

Lift has very little to do with where the powerband is. The 583s have a much earlier intake closing than stock, and are intended to bring the torque in early.
