Default Quarter Fairings-do they really work?

buddy of mine wants to get a Superglide custom soon, and he really likes the look of the arlen ness quarter fairing, the guys at the harley dealer claim that quarter fairings create a ton of buffeting at highway speeds, and he'd be better off with a windshield

i know alot of folks on here have them, whats your thoughts on quarter fairings and highway running?

I haven't had mine above 90mph yet but from 0-90mph it makes a world of difference.

Any of the small fairings are more aerodynamic than a windshield.

My MS Gauntlet works great. It doesn't block as much wind as a full fairing, but it keeps the blast off my chest.

its going to depend on where the wind hits you. this will be different for each rider and fairing. if you can get the wind to hit near your collarbone or below your buffeting wont be bad.
if it hits mid helmet you'll go nuts pretty quick.

a fairing or flyscreen are highly usefull once ya get past 65mph or so. below that i never had a problem with a naked front end.

The guys at that dealership don't sell Ness fairings, so of course they're going to say they don't work. I bet they'd be more than happy to sell your friend an HD fairing or windshield, along with all the hardware and a bunch of over-priced HD branded "motorclothes" too!

I have risen with an old Emgo Viper that I modified to work with my bike and I run a Memphis Shades Gauntlet now. They both work great. They cut down on the wind blasting my chest and I've never had an issue with buffeting.

I have a conley 1/4 fairing, copy of the HD version and it works way better than you would expect for the size and no buffeting at all for me.

My bike, which I purchased used, came with a fairly large windshield. I replaced it with a JD Customs & Fabrications FXDX-T reporduction fairing that is significantly smaller than the windshield, and much better looking. Interestingly, although smaller, the JD Customs fairing blocks just as much wind as the larger windshield.

What size screen did you opt into? How tall are your bars/risers? Any pics?

Thanks.
