Default Oil Pan Replacement

Has anyone ever had to replace their oil pan?

I have an 05 Dyna Super Glide and this morning while on a ride my oil pan got punctured by a rouge rock or something. Small hole now on the front of the pan - almost looks like someone took a punch to it.

I'm now going to have to replace the oil pan, which looks fairly easy to access, minus one or two bolts that look like the frame blocks them.

I don't have a jack, so I'll be doing this all on the ground.

Is this even possible, and if som what fluids am i going to have to drop. Thanks!

How about trying a JB Weld repair first?

I rode my buddies bike to O'Reillys to buy some of that and a couple qts of oil. The parking lot I was stuck in had limited tools.

The JB Weld hung on long enough for me to get the bike back running and home, which was about 5 miles away.

Now that the puncture is there, I think I'd rather just replace it rather than risk major engine damage.

Default Oil Pan

Why not just pull it off the bike clean it up and weld a patch on the inside of the pan ? It is easier to make it leak proof if it is done from the inside and by the time you put a coat of black paint on the outside, no one but you will even know it's there. Just be sure to flatten the metal around the hole before you get the welding done...

I am not set up for aluminum welding and have had it done at my local machine shop on occasion. I would guess $15 to $20 is all it would cost to weld the inside repair.

Yeah ..been there done that ..hit something in the road on the way to work and didn't know it until I got to work .put it on kickstand and all this oil came out ..thought something was funny on the last left turn ..real squirrelly ..I just replaced the oil pan and kept the old one and had it welded .it had a hole about the size of a #2 pencil ..I can laugh at it now ..but then it wasn't so funny seeing as I was leaving at lunch for a couple days ride

Drain your engine and gearbox oil and go for it. l cut down an allen key to get at the bolts blocked by the frame, otherwise , it's a pretty easy job to do.

Have to agree with the remove and weld. Be many dollars ahead.
