Default Inner primary bearing seal

I'm pretty sure that seal is leaking and the baker bearing/ seal has been recommended, I just want to be sure I'm buying the correct kit from baker. PN 189-56 is listed on their site for up to 2007 but I'm pretty sure that's the one I need (08 FXD). Also I'm wondering how this thing could be leaking at 20k and damn near being ridden everyday, what's could be causing this? Something else I need to look into? I'm going to put the bike on the lift tomorrow and make sure that the seal is the source of the leak, but I'm sure that's it.

Hi,

I just dealt with same thing FXDWG 2010, 32000kms, i thought it just the seal as when i measured the inner bearing race it was close to spec but it has to be about 2mm from main gear shaft

The inner primary bearing was fine, replaced the inner beAring race and seal and installed with Heartland tool and all been good since

I think there a change in 07+ bikes so baker and S&S dont make those parts

Thanks

Hi,

I would wait until inner primary is removed so everything exposed and can determine exact leak

Thanks

Looks like it's for sure the pri seal leaking

Question to the guys that know what they're doing. Does it look like the pri bearing race has walked? I don't want to put a new seal in just to have it leak again

Thanks guys

Hi,

I think the manual spec is 2-3mm from main gear shaft, when first had a go at mine i measured distance and it was around the 3mm so i left it thinking just seal, replaced seal and it leaked agin but less than first

In the photo it looks close, measure it, on second go i went with about 2mm off the main gear shaft, put a new race on and new seal, no leaks

Thanks

Thanks for all your help mirrmu I really appreciate it man! I ended up sending this same pic to my good friend who's a hd mechanic and he said the race looked like it was good. I didn't end up replacing the bearing since the race was staying and just replaced the seal which was for sure leaking. It's all back together now, I upgraded to the SE clutch discs and spring while I was in there. It's only gotta hold for about another 10k til next winter when the motor comes out!

I just replaced my seal last night. I have 44k miles on the bike and it's been giving off a drip or two after a ride for the past 15k miles. this last ride I did about 200 miles it finally started spitting out more oil so it was time. The actual seal change took less than 5 minutes.

Yea the seal change is easy, just wanted to make sure the race was in the right spot so the new seal didn't fail again

Hi,

No worries monster715 i hope the new seal fixes it, its an easy job pulling all the primary off just a bit time consuming
