Question Left turn signal don't work. 97 FXDL

I got out the shop manual (HD) and did the diagnostic for the tsm. Everything checked out and according to the flow chart it was the tsm, so I replaced it. The both turn signal worked fine for about an hour. Then the left side stopped working once again. When I got this bike a couple of years ago the left side worked sometimes then would quit working. Last year it stopped working on the left. Any Ideas what the problem could be? Loose connection on tsm? Bad ground on tsm causing it to burn out? Also was thinking of replacing tsm with my own retro fit flashers, good idea, bad idea? Thanks for any help.

I have the same overall problem...maybe not the same cause...

My bike was lowered before I got it, and due to that it rubs on the wire coming out of the turn signal going to the brake light (where it then travels up the rear fender going to wherever it goes from there). Now, since it rubs in just the right spot it actually tore through my wire. I rewired it over the winter, but it only worked for about a day until I'm sure it happened again...I haven't dropped the wheel since to check it.

Take your finger and feel inside your fender for the wire. Since it SOMETIMES works and sometimes not; I'd be willing to guess that it just shorts out sometimes. If you have the ability to drop your rear tire and take a peek under the fender at the wire to make sure your tire didn't rub some of the coating off or something. I'd try that first before you go out spending a lot of money.

That is happening to me as well. Intermittent problem. I just installed side plates, and did not do anything to tuck the wires, because I really didn't know what to do. Everything lights at idle, but a LOE stopped me last night, saying they weren't working. They worked with the bike stopped, so he let me go.

Can someone, here, post best practice to secure these wires? Should they be tucked between the inside bracket and fender? Please help.

I did have quick release bracket on the bike when I bought it used. I felt around under the fender and sure enough I felt loose tape on the wire. I pull on the wire a little and turned the key, pressed the L turn signal button and yes it flashed. I'm still out the $140.00 for the new TSM, but now I know where the problem is. Thanks for your quick response to my post, all three of you were dead on right. Thanks again. Never would of looked there in a million years.

Yeah, I have no idea WHERE to stick the wires so they will not rub. I thought about epoxying it to the top of the inside of the fender.

I was thinking of heat shrink the wires, then epoxy like you said.

Consider something like this to protect the wire:
