Default 2011 Street Bob Fuel Tank capacity issue

I recently acquired this bike so I'm still getting a feel for it's personality. I did a quick search of the forum for this issue and I didn't find anything, so I apologize if this topic has been covered.

I went on a 180-mile ride yesterday, and before I left I made certain my tank was absolutely full. The previous owner added an aftermarket tach/speedo with a built-in fuel gauge, and the gauge indicated I was basically running on fumes when I got home. When I refilled the tank at the local gas station, the tank was full again at 3.5 gallons. I have a stock full tank, and the specifications indicate it holds 4.7 gallons.

It is possible the fuel gauge is inaccurate and I had over a gallon of gas left, but assuming that's not it, what other issue could it be?? Any insights are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you know if you have a tank lift kit installed? This will make the gauge off even more and lower the amount of fuel you can add.
