Default stalling on long trips?

recently had an issue while out on a ride with my 1996 dyna low rider,
after about 2 hours of riding, as I came to a stop, the bike stalled. and wouldn't start again for about 45 minutes to an hour.

a few people have said it may be the ignition sensor getting too hot, others have said it may be a bad coil.

I have already wrapped the exhaust and it still does it.

has anyone had a similar problem, and been able to remedy it. please let me know.

Maybe its water (condensation) in the tank.
As you run low on gas, the water that is floating on top of the gas begins to be used.

Water is heavier than gasoline.

You have probably already tried it, but when it stalls, remove the gas cap and see if it's vapor locking.

If it's not that, I would think the coil.

Had that happen on my brand new Deluxe. Battery cables had vibrated loose or they didn't tighten them well at the dealership.

From your description it sounds like a coil problem. The next time it happens remove a spark plug from the engine but leave it attached to the wire. Hold it real close to something metal like the engine and then turn over the engine. If the spark plug arcs against the engine or you see sparks then the problem is not the coil. I'm suspecting that it is though. When coils heat up too much they can expand and break the electrical connections. When they cool back down the connections are restored.

Expansion and contraction do to heat is normal on an engine though. It may not be a heat (Too Hot) problem. Your coil may have just been expanded and contracted one to many times and is at the end of it's life.

Good Luck!

This would be my first check too...mostly cause it's the easiest to check. When it stalls open the gas cap....if you here a sound of air rushing in, your vented gas cap is likely to blame.

That's OK, this is ... err ... used to be free world before Obama, you can have water floating over gasoline in your tank. It's just extremely unlikely it is the case with OP as it contradicts basic physics.
