Default 'Dry' oil change level at change too high

2012 FXDC Changed the oil and filter myself for the 1st time. As in the service manual I added 3 quarts. Hot and on the kickstand the dipstick reads about 1/2 quart over. 'Dry' does mean with the filter being changed too doesn't it? Never had this problem on my other HD's.

Oil change with filter always 2.7qts bang on. Don't follow manual and overfill, it will blow out from air cleaner when hot.

To answer your question, dry means from factory bone dry engine.

Your engine holds 3 qts. but you only add 2-1/2 during a change.

Just curious... Does it change the way it runs if you do this?

Oil and filter change...dump in 3 qts...hit the road problem free! To me that dip stick is a useless pile anyway!

What does this mean? Do what? Put too much oil in an engine?

After taking 1/2 quart out it ran better. Took a 20 mile ride on the interstate at 70, checked oil level and it was dead on the full mark. Thanks to all for the replies.
