Default 1k service and oil change advice

So the time is here for the first oil change.
I was going to get it done at the stealership but they want something around $400 for the 1k service so I figure I'm just going to go at it myself. I'm pretty mechanically savvy.

I know I will need oil and a filter, anything else you guys recommend checking out or changing now? Just over 1k miles.

What oil should I get? Also, just get a standard filter from the dealer?

Thanks.

I would pick up a service manual. Will list everything you need to do and when.

FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS?! Do they suck your dick in a dark alley after they change your oil?! GEEZ.

As for the "kind of oil" you'll get a million different answers: Redline, Amsoil, Amsoil in all three holes, or some guy that came up with a secret formula like Penzoil for the engine, Redline for the trans, and buffalo spit for the primary...you're better off just using the search feature in this forum and reading the endless discussions yourself.

As for the filter, get one from the dealer. I used to run car filters on my bike (Luberfiner 2835 or equivalents) but now that I have new oil pump I've [painfully] discovered that the shape/size/width of the gasket in the OEM filter is the best fit for your Harley. (I might wanna try K&N for the next time but hey...if it ain't broke, don't fix it)

Yes I believe the service manual is around $60.00 at the dealer. I have a 2008 Fat Bob and that is what mine cost at the dealer. You could also try Ebay for your manual. Might find one cheaper.

I got my service manual on eBay for around $45.

It will definitely come handy through the life of your bike.

Any warranty risk not having the bike serviced at the dealership?

My local is 375 but you can get it a little cheaper if you buy into their whole "special person" bullshit plans.
