Angry engine/battery light

Riding a 2008 FXDL.
Went for a ride a week ago and on the way home, my check engine and battery light both came on. I checked all the connections and found nothing. Seeing how the battery was the original, I replaced it. Started it and let it run and seemed OK but did not take it out for a ride. Well, on my way to work this morning at 4:30 a.m., they came on again. Where now? Could it be the voltage regulator? I have a shop manual but I do not have the electrical manual. Can someone walk me through testing the regulator and even the alternator if needed?

Thanks

Pull up the code that is being thrown with the Check Engine light, and then I or others can tell you what area to concentrate on.

Default engine /battery light

Did LOTS more research and pulled up these codes;
PO562 - Battery Voltage Low ?
b1121 - Left Turn Outpoot Fault ?

Also got what I thought to be d1A9 did not find anythign listed for this code

also had a no rsp (no responce?)
Also got codes Pn 67481-046 and a Pn32929-07A, I am thinking these are part #'s

Do you know if your charging system is working?

These codes are telling you what is failing, not necessarily what is causing it...

Check your charging system and get back with the results...I bet a plug nickel that you will find the problem when you do.

Default engine/battery light

These are the numbers I got;

Battery - 13 V
Battery @ 1,000 RPM - 14.14
resistence across the stator pins - .04
continuity between pins showed nothing
started bike and V between pins @ 1,000 RPM - jumped between 18 and 19
Is there others that I need to take

Thank you for your help

I am assuming that the voltage output from the stator was AC volts...if so, those readings look good.

Next, I would look at the left turn signal circuit for shorts or corrosion or something fishy...

Just recently, I experienced a shorted light blowing the fuse but not before draining the battery...sounds strange, but I rode around 75 miles and stopped for a fill-up and water break and my SG would not start because the battery was too low. I got a jump and rode it 5 miles to the local HD dealer and they put their testers on it and could not find anything wrong so I rode on to my destination and home...later, I noticed my fog lights were not working and when I troubleshot the system, I found the right fog light housing had come loose and shorted out the circuit before blowing the 15 amp fuse. I repaired the light housing and replaced the fuse and all is well now. That was all I could find wrong and I have not had any more problems with a low battery since.

Before you do anything else check the ground from the voltage regulator. If it is even slightly loose it can cause both lights to come on simultaneously.

I've got a 2010 FXDF with 27,000 on it. About 2500 miles ago, it started with the same thing (P0562) - both lights (battery and CEL) would come on, then go off after awhile.

It started then occasionally throwing P0563 (voltage high) code. At this point I suspected a weak/shorted cell in the battery (had already tested VAC and continuity on the stator). Bought a new battery because it was the cheapest part to replace (a little voice inside my head kept saying "regulator, regulator, regulator"). 20 miles down the road and the same thing.

Replaced the voltage regulator and 2400 miles later she's running just fine. Also, a note - HD has updated the part number so obviously improvements have been made.

C note says it's voltage regulator.

I forgot to ask...did you get those DC readings at the battery with the battery and engine lights on or were they off?

You will have to reconnect the stator and do the battery charging voltage test when the fail lights are on...

If you are having an intermittent problem here, then looking for a loose connection at the VR is a good place to start...also, you could have an electronic failure in the VR...and if it is intermittent, then it could be a heat related failure...
