Bought an Iron 883 recently & just ordered V&H staggered short shots with the SE Heavy Breather. The dealer advises their down load V&H offers the Fuel Pak. Does anyone have any experience with the Fuel Pak.

thanks in advance guys, this techno stuff is enough to get me cornfused quick, fast and in a hurry.

By download you mean the Harley Stage 1 they charge you $150 to do?

I am getting an 05 Heritage Softail Classic that is bone stock.

I am going to put on V&H Big Shots, SE Air Cleaner with K&N filter and a PC III.

Are you saying the stage 1 download is unneccasary if I run the PC III Map with stock ECU.

I am planning on getting it dyno tuned in Laconia,(we have no one that does it around here) but am going to run it off the canned map till I do.

I ran my 02 HSTC off the same set up but with a stage 1 ecu and canned map and it ran great.

Should I bother with the Stage 1 download or not?

Thanks

They have improved the download vastly since the problems back in 06 and 07. You don't need the download (as far as I know) if you're gonna use a PCIII or Race Tuner. The canned maps worked OK (until 06) as long as you didn't do anything drastic to your bike. Harley was trying to keep the bikes lean to meet the EPA Standards and even the High Performance kits form Harley ran too lean.

So my 06 Softail should have something else? The guy I bought it from had the open air filter installed, Vance and Hines short-shots, and what he explained to me as "the full race download" put into the ECM. The way he explained it to me was a "Stage 1 Kit with a full race download". It runs really well from my experience. The only issues I've ever had is a sluggish throttle response off idle (think sitting at a traffic light and cracking the throttle to make some noise), and just last week it wanted to stall when I pulled up to a red light. Almost like it ran to rich when I dropped the throttle. But when I changed plugs last season, they weren't overly black, but they weren't the nice tan color that a good running engine should have. Ideas??????

Not exactly true. The closed loop design with the O2 sensors didn't start until 07. Your 06 runs in open loop all the time so a Fuel Pak, or Power Commander would work well for your bike. I'm sure Fuel Moto could set you up.

I'm new to the HD Forum. I've been lurking here in the background, trying to learn about Harley's EFI. I recently acquired a 2005 FLHTP-I, a former Police bike. I was basically bone stock, minus all the usual Police lights. I wanted to upgrade to a Screamin' Eagle Stage I intake for several reasons: 1) a little more power never hurts, 2) I'm tired of lookin at that ugly plastic back plate on my airbox and 3) with care, the filter should last as long as I have the bike.

I read this thread several times trying to learn what all I needed to do for this simple Stage I upgrade. If it meant spending $500 on a SERT, plus $150 for the Stage I parts, I was going to leave the intake alone. I don't plan on changing the stock mufflers. They are quiet but still have a nice sound. The holes in the tips seem plenty big. And I may put in a stereo later, so I don't want the bike loud.

After reading how the SERT was the way to go, I talked to my local Harley mechanic and he told me I should do the Stage I Download. He said the Download was made specifically for the intake upgrade that I wanted to do. So, $150 later (for the Download plus the $150 for the SE Stage I kit, which I'd already bought), I'm a happy camper. The bike runs basically how it ran before, but better, with a little more passing power. When I say it runs like it ran before, I mean that it fires right up, there is no surging or uneven idle, no flat spot on acceleration and no popping on deceleration (I f*kng hate that).

So for someone looking to do minor upgrades like mine, you don't need a SERT or Power Commander. Now if you want to do more extreme mods, you'll probably need a SERT. But after reading that the Stage I Download was a "band-aid", I felt I should respond. I did the Stage I Download and I'm one happy camper.

Ride safe...
