Instrument bulb question.

Instrument bulb question.
The single filament instrument lights on my 93 Softail are marked E2 GE 57. When I go to the store I can find the correct one but there are a bunch of bulbs that exact same size that would fit but they are numbered differently. What do the numbers stand for? Are they different voltage, wattage, amperage, brightness, what?
What I'd really like to know is how can I tell which would be the brightest???
