Default Speedo disconnection

Hey people. New to this forum.
Have a 2004 Sportster and want to know if I disconnect the electronic speedo to run the wiring in a different way (am in the process of fitting fat tanks with the speedo in the dashboard on the tank) will i lose the current speedo reading or upset the Electronic Diagnostic System in any way?

No, not if you reuse the same speedo, the odometer reading is stored in the speedo, and as always when working on electronics disconnect the battery or pull the main fuse first. And welcome to the forum.
