I think my engine oil is seeping into the primary case via the left crank shaft oil seal. Can this seal be replaced by just removing the stator or do I have to split the cases?
I do have the service manual. It says nothing about it other than refer to the assembly when everything is disassembled..
The installation of the left side crank seal is included in the installation sequence of the left side case half in Section 3 of the manual. I think it is pretty clear from the instructions and the illustration that the seal can be installed without splitting the cases but that's JMHO.

I guess I overlooked it then. Thanks for the lead.

Easy to miss as it is not specific instructions for the seal but instruction for assembling the left side crankcase/crank. It's very near the end of Section 3 in my SM; next to last page IIRC.

Ok, found it is section 3.10. Dang, needs more special tools. I suppose I could improvise that and use the compensator bolt to apply the pressure.

Definitely improvise; you are on the right track. Main thing is to avoid damaging the lip and getting it started in the bore straight and seated solid. A piece of proper sized PVC will help.
