Headwork on a stock 96 engine with 48 cams is an unusual combo that none of the big shops do so read into that what you will.

If the heads come off, that's be the time to bore the cylinders and add new pistons. Missed opportunity otherwise.

Cost of headwork v going big bore?

Also consider when heads come off for either work or big bore work, compression is often increased for performance but in your case this wouldn't suit your 48 cams.

I wouldn't do the headwork myself. I'd either leave it as it is or go the full hog and do headwork along with big bore and cam change.
I agree, but it comes down to money I guess. It would be hard to have the heads off and not have the cylinders bored to 107 and purchase the pistons. Especially if the bikes a 96 inch. Then you would have a zero mile top end, 11 more cubes and still not to bad on the pocket of you turn the wrenches. Probably really feel the difference .

If your set on the 48's then do just that and the A/C, pipe and tune. you will notice a significant increase. forget about the heads...........

Hotrod the op already has the 48s in the bike. Looking for more with headwork.

Heads will not offer you a dollar value on that combo.
A good tune will historically yield at/very near 90 hp and 100 ft/lbs.
Lastly, a 107" will push the compression up over the top, for the use of that 48.
We have matched, "budget-build" 107"/S&S E-Z cam combos, starting as low as $998.00.

headwork will help any build as long as the heads are ported for the exact build their being used on,that said, looking for more power,a 107" kit (or even a 103" kit) will give more power.we have used the 48`s with a 107" kit (once, for a guy on HTT) by opening the combustion chamber to 90 cc (10.0-1),worked very well,so it can be done if your stuck on the 48`s

I just want something bit more on top end grunt. If I'm loaded down on the interstate with a little headwind 85 is about it. Could it just be the power vision tune is the problem? I have ran auto tune sessions about 4 of them. Or just better off getting a custom tune

With the 107'' are you putting the crank and the stock clutch to the max? Or will they handle that with no problems?

Id check the crank first. 07's probably the most likely to have issues. Adding a SE pressure plate usually is good enough for a 107 IMO. Riding style might dictate that though.

What dyno numbers do you see from that "budget-build" Scott? I'm interested!! :-)
