Rockout inserts, 2014 FLHTK
Hi all,
Last fall I ordered a couple sets of Rockouts, and finally got around to installing them today on the Limited. There are many threads about this, so this will be a few pics and just a few words to add to the data, hopefully useful to someone down the road.
Bike on lift, ready for the work....
Tank and seat off, plug wires removed and plugs loose...
Tank on the floor, do yourself a favor and either drain or run it down a few gallons first. I didn't, due to winter prep, so it was heavy.
Here's what it looks like under the valve cover on the front cylinder on a wet-head...
Once the rocker assembly is removed, this is what you see (rear cylinder)...
Once on the bench, the rocker assembly is easy to work on...
These little cutouts are what locate the rocker arm shafts in the assembly. The rocker arms themselves have what appear to be (bronze?) bushings to ride on the shafts, so you'd think that the shafts wouldn't be able to move at all, yes?
Installing the Rockout inserts was actually the easiest part of the whole job. They press in fairly easily, and getting them in properly is no big deal at all, just don't force anything and all will be well...insert installed on the right side in this pic for comparison.
While I was at the project, I decided to add a little bling to the top of the motor, chrome hardware!!!!
And...awesome plug wires to go with the new spark plugs!!!
Backed off the lift and ran the bike until the fans kicked on (raining here today, winter sand/salt a total mess), and everything is working as expected. Nice and quiet, very pleasant.
Good product, great instructions, fantastic price, and a simple solution to an irritating problem. This bike has always been fairly quiet, except when hot and cruising at steady speeds between 30-45 mph. Clackity-clack... I'll have to wait a while to test under those conditions, and looking forward to it!
I have another set ready to go for the Dyna, or maybe for someone else...
All the best,
Shane
