Default Lifters & Cam questions

I just bought an S&S 97" kit and 510gear drive cam kit . I have the motor apart waiting on the parts. My questions are this, do I need to replace the lifters and the oil pump ? If so what brand ? I have a line on some Delphi lifters , is this a good brand ? This is on an 04 FXSTD . TIA

If the lifters have 25K miles or more, I would replace them. Delphi is a good brand but they are made in different countries, like Mexico for one. The only Delphi's I would buy would be those made in the USA. The Comp Cams VThunder 850-1 lifters are good quality and cheap if looking for a cost effective alternative. You can spend up to $300 for a set of lifters if you want to go to the high end.

I have run a 95" build in my '05 FXSTD with gear drive cams and the OEM cam plate and pump for 10K miles now without issues. Upgrading to the SE Hybrid cam plate and oil pump is a nice upgrade if you are ready to spend about $400 for a billet plate and upgraded oil pump.

The delphis Im looking at are made in the usa . As far as the cam plate I see no reason to update something that I cant see when the original works just as well .

How do you like your gear drive ?

Crank had .0025" runout, used standard size gears and no issues; a little gear whine but less noise than the OEM chain drive setup.

Kirby I have to agree with u on that one after switching the woods cams to the s&s cams I still had the valve train noise. removed the woods directional lifters which only had 3000 miles on them and were noise the day i put them in I complained to scott and could not stand the noise any more so I put a set of premium s&s lifters noise gone period.

The runout on mine is also in the .0025 range. Did you remove the dowel pins the tensioners are mounted on or just leave them ?

have not heard that, could be the case, dont really know.i just know the S&S lifters work,so we use them.when we`re doing a build,we don't hunt & search for the cheapest price,we find something that works,& we use it
