Did they change vendors or the design of the lifter? I hear a lot of negatives about them and wondered what it was about.

Default Harley 99C Tappets.............

These tappet's that Harley uses are made in Mexico, the materials are just not the quality that some other USA made product's are........

I had 2 tappet's go bad with in 6,000 mile's on a new bike, and there many other's that have had the same issue's.

If you google this style tappet you will find some interesting commentary on these tappet's.

So do yourself a favor if you are going to do an upgrade, change them out there are plenty of other choice's out there that will have much better quality and life span.

As is typical, when the MoCo changes suppliers/vendors, there is always a year or two of quality issues. IIRC, the lifter manufacture shifted to Mexico in the 2010 model year and there were issues reported related to the roller and other general quality issues for the first couple of years. I don't believe that just because something is manufactured in Mexico, by default, means that the product will be of inferior quality. There are many other products that have been in Mexico for years without quality issues.

There have not been as many issues with the "C" lifter reported in the recent past but if I was changing lifters as part of a motor upgrade, I would replace the OEM lifters with an aftermarket piece that was made in the USA.

Some seem to develop leakage after short service causing tapping upon start-up, and we've witnessed a large amount of lateral lifter wheel movement.

Yes, and we do stock S&S lifters in both premium, and standard.
