Hello, just put a new battery in a 97 Heritage Soft tail today. I check the voltage and all the number were in spec but when I felt the wires coming from the stator going to the voltage reg they were very HOT. What could be causing this I am stumped?


Bike has a Compu fire stator, rotor and voltage reg.

Just my guess but I think your stator is shorted to the engine case. Pull the plug at the front of the primary and check it with an ohm meter. Both prongs should show 0 ohms to the engine case.

 

Hot electrical parts are a good sign of a short somewhere.
Go through the checking your charging system sticky above and make sure all readings are correct.

 

Go to the sticky posted by Dr. Hess and check your system according to those instructions. Pull the stator plug, check for shorts, continuity and AC output. If you have a problem.....this inspection/evaluation will find it. There are some errors in the instructions posted in the General Mechanical Section....use the one posted by Dr. Hess in the EVO section.
