I posted on the tech forum, but didn't get any response. I'm looking to change fluids(3 holes) on my 1997 FXSTC. I do have the service manual, but I don't think they mention the needed tools for the job. I'd appreciate some guidance here. Tools required:

• transmission dipstick
• transmission drain plug
• primary drain plug
• derby cover screws

I'm a little embarrassed to say I could not easily locate the transmission drain plug, but now I "think" I've found it. I don't have stock pipes and my current pipes cover the transmission fluid reservoir pretty well. I "believe" the transmission drain plug is a recessed hole underneath, to the rear of the transmission fluid reservoir(dead center), in between 2 screws? Man, it feels pretty stupid to be a beginner. Go easy on me please.

 

A T-27 will do all but the tranny dipstick.
A larger allen will take care of that.
I'm not sure what size it is but it is the second one down in a set a bought at Home Depot.


Don't sweat asking questions. We were all new once.


Oh and your tranny drain plug is in the middle bottom of the right side of your tranny.

 

I am not trying to be mean, and I was a newbie once too.....but, if you can't look at a bolt or screw and not know what to loosen it with, have someone either show you, or help you the first time around. If you strip things or break things, it will cost you $$$ to have a mechanic fix it. Find someone mechanical or handy. They don't even have to be bike savvy........my .02.

I use a 3/4 inch socket for the drain plug on the trans and motor, the t-27 will get the derby cover off, I thing the primary drain is a t-35 or t-40, and I'm unsure of the size of the allen wrench for the dipstick, but its the biggest one in my craftsman set. Make sure you check the O-rings on the drain plugs and replace if needed. Also put on a new derby cover gasket, I like the O-ring type rather than the paper on with the silicone on it. Make sure that when you are putting everything back together not to strip anything.
