I think the starter mount is the same for cases built `89 and later.

The `88 and earlier cases had a smaller opening for the starter.

A 2005 won't work because it will not bolt up to an EVO..completely different up front..you need a 93-98. Starter won't be a problem.

Man this one is jumping around a bit, let's start with the starter 89 primary is different from the 1990 where the starter bolts up. IMHO the 90 and up starters were more reliable. The other change happened in 1994 where the ring gear changed from 66 tooth to a 102 tooth.
Now the gears, gears as a complete set can be used in any case that accepted a 5 speed example you can put a complete cluster from a 2006 into a 1987.

Swapping individual gears can be changed from 1996-2006, 1996 was the year Harley went to High Contact gears which some one eluded to earlier.

Mainshafts, the first 5 speed mainshafts were the tapered and in 1990 they went to splined so doing this mix and match will require a clutch change.

Cases the same case was used on FL's until 1993,and FXR's till 1994. FL 93-98, 99-00, a one year only case in 01 then 02-06

Softail cases early till 89, 1990-1999 then 2000-06

Dyna cases 1991-98 , 99-00, 01-06

neutral switches all the same from when the dinosaurs were born till 1997 a single pole normally open switch.
1998-99 a double pole normally closed switch( same location)
00-06 a double pole normally open switch about .020 to the left.

All should be clear as a dirty fish tank now.

Oops forgot about the shifter pawl and bushing that change happened in 2000 on the softails and 2001 on the FL's and Dyna's. This was also the years they changed the shift drums when they went from 1/4 inch drum pin's to 1/8 inch drum pins so not only is the shaft of the shifter pawl longer on the late models but also the arm was changed to accept the new drum pin size. The springs were much more reliable on the late models as well.

Perfect. Thanks Tom and Mark.

I'll be on the lookout for a 93-98 trans

Spaced my thoughts on that. It would be great if someone made an adapter plate to make it work. Then we could get a Twinkie 6 speed and bolt it in after changing the pivot shaft mounts or swingarm. Would have to work around the primary differences too.

They make a similar plate to mount the twin cam engine to EVO trans. wish I was a better fabricator or CNC machine savy

The starter mounts on the early through `88 were slightly different than the later models, the hole was smaller but can be opened up to accomodate the modern starter.

`89 was the first year of the modern starter configuration.

Hmm I was pretty sure it was 90 but I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. There is also an adapter to make a late model hole smaller to except the early starter. Should that strange need arise.

Dan's right 89 was the first year of the larger starter. Had to look it up in the parts book, learn something new every day. Thanks Dan.
