Anyone have any ideas on how to run a speedo on the ol fxr without that nasty cable to the front wheel?

Someone makes an adapter that runs off the rear wheel. It might be electrical only, so you'd need a new speedo. Or swap the transmission for one that has a drive on it. Probably also need a new speedo.

They make rear wheel mechanical drive kits for softails...but it is the wrong ratio for an fxr(2240:60)...you could buy the kit and change the drive out...or use the pic to build your own.
