Zimm, HD made a kit years ago to do what you are attempting. Makes life very simple if you can find the kit. I had my parts guy do a "dealer search" and he found it for me. This is what you need, sorry no part number.
The kit was made from approximately 2000 (when they introduced the thinner belt) to about 2004. My guy just dug up an old HD Parts Catalog, turned to the Dyna section and there the kit was with the part #. Then he did the dealer search, located the kit and had that dealer send it to him, I bought it from my guy for the list price from a 10 year old catalog.
The kit was a new HD 1-1/8" belt with a narrow pulley that has the correct bolt pattern and spacing built in to fit your pre-2000 wheel. The kit also comes with all needed gaskets etc for the conversion. With that you can fit a 150, nice and snug. I did it on my 1997 Wide Glide, no problems. The pulley is what the kit is all about, fitting the old wheel to the new belt.
Good luck.

im running 1 1/8 x 128 on my chop and I ran into belt problems the first belt was a stock Harley sportster belt broke within 30 miles then I went to a gates Kevlar belt and ripped 16 teeth off of it with one hole shot next one was a stock buell belt and got about 200 miles out of that one. now im using a goodyear carbon and my problems went away.

I don’t mean to be the guy that brings up an old thread but how did this work out for you? I have a 96 also that needs a belt anywaysand figured I’d swap it over so I can run a bigger tire. Did you run into any issues or was it straight forward? Did you use a kit or all stock parts? Any help would be cool as I’m starting to gather parts right now. Thanks again
