Default dyna- going narrower than 1 1/2" belt?

My belt is pretty well worn and the chrome on rear pulley teeth is flaking off. As a winter project I was going to do new pulleys and a belt (they're original with 46,000 miles). I've read that I can convert to the newer 1 1/8" set up from a 2000+ dyna and then go with a 150 rear tire instead of my 130. Will a stock dyna setup work for me? Do I need anything special?

I'm running a 1 1/8" belt on my 1990 Glide, however I have changed the entire swingarm and rear wheel. You will probably find that the narrow rear pulley has a later spec larger central hole in it, so will be a sloppy fit on your hub. I only recently discovered that spacers are available that may get around that problem. The pulley fixing screw pattern on both generations of hub is the same. Belt tooth pitch is the same, so a new narrow belt will run on your stock front pulley.

The 150/80 fits with space to spare, just be aware that size is available in a low load rating version, as well as a higher rating better suited to our bikes, also V-rated ones are available, with softer rubber. So choose with care!

As Graham stated the only difference your going to run into is the bore at the mounting flange. There is a couple companies making spacers to take up this slack. Also depending what tooth count your rear pulley is finding a good ebay Sportster pulley is another option.

I have a 150/80-16 mounted to a 13 spoke mag on my FXR with an 1 1/2" belt by spacing the pulley away from the wheel. Does the early Dyna's not have enough space to do this?

Spacing the pulley away from the wheel at the very least mis-aligns the pulleys shortening belt life...not the best plan...going to the 1 1/8 belt is a better plan IMO

Not so sure that would always be the case.. Doesn't it matter how much room you have on the front pulley?? It very well could run another 1/4" or so, to the left... But, I do agree that you don't want to side load it..

Every bike I have ever taken apart, the rear pulley was alined with the left side of the front pulley, and the belt runs on the belt guide...no room to go any further left without being mis-alined.

Interesting.. I cant say any differently, just thought they typically ran in the center.. Definitely good info to keep in mind though..

My belt runs all the way to the left of the trans pulley and is running perfectly straight. I guess I should have been a little more specific when mentioning spacing the pulley away from the wheel. Then again common sense would say not to space the pulley out past the point of straight alignment.

Default Gates 1" Polychain

BDL has set ups for their 1" Gates Poly chain that can really take some punishment. My 98 has 94 lbs of torque and never a problem. Follow this link for the belts and Pulley's.

While your changing your pulley you might as well change the final ratio, I did and it really gets up and goes. You will need the spacer but don't worry it fits the rear rim hub perfecfecly. I did however have it machined from 15/16" wide to 13/16" and my belt alignment was absolutly perfect. You can call them and they will help you with the ordering and kits. Pulley, belt and spacer runs 400.00 delivered. I am very happy with the qaulity. Also I really think the rear will take a 160 I have a 150 on it and there is still 3/8" space between the belt and tire.

Great info. So I can either go with the 1" BDL kit, or adapt a newer 2000+ rear pulley and belt. I don't think I want to mess with my final drive ratio, I'm already reving like 3200rpm at 75mph on my highway commute.

I found the adaptor here for $6. They also have spacers, I'll have to see what my alignment is. http://vulcanworks.net/store_4/produ...5&cat=2&page=1

So I would just need a 133 tooth stock 1 1/8" belt and a stock dyna 70 tooth rear pulley? Is it worth changing the front if it's worn and pitted? Mine actually looks a little nicer than tom84's pic above.
