Default 1996 EVO Upgrade

I have a 1996 EVO, Ultra Classic, with 73,500 miles on it. The only thing done to it was a EV 27 cam and new cam bearing. The compression on both cylinders is 160 psi, it runs good, uses no oil between changes, well maybe a half a quart in 5,000 miles. I'm getting the hankering to build it a little bigger for a little more torque/HP. I've been looking at the S&S stroke kits, they have 88, 96, 98, and 103, does anyone have experience with one of these?
Thanks for any info...

My brother's springer is a 95 S&S and it runs like a raped ape! If I ever did mine, it would be to 95....

You'll get plenty of improvement with higher compression pistons, cam, and headwork. I went with Hillside cycle, he's done a bunch of evos and has the "recipe" right. At least 80hp/80ft/lbs torque, which should put you over a stock 103 motor. And you can leave the motor in the bike because it's just the top end...

Here's the email from Scott about the upgrade:

Bob Wood W-6 cam
10.0 cr.
Our Stage II Heads
Dyna 2000i or Crane HI-4
Either a re-worked CV, 42 Mik, or S&S E
Supertrapp 2/1, Thunderheader, or Cycle Shack 2/2's.
80-85 hp, low 90's torque, with EXCELLENT fuel economy.
Must've built 75-100 of these over the years.......
Reliable, smooth combination.
Not enough?
A bit more compression and a Wood 8.
That will hover @ 95 hp, and 95 ft/lbs.
Scott

I suspect you may be mixing up your Evo with the later twincam engines. S&S make an 89" stroker kit for Evos, which uses the stock bore. Twincams have much thicker crankcases than our Evos, so can be both bored and stroked, which is how that 103" is achieved. Stock Evo crankcases cannot be readily bored out in the same way as a twincam.

You still have options! A stroker kit (I rode with a JIMS one for several years) is certainly worthwhile, although I also had my heads ported. There are builders who can rebuild your engine either as a stroker or stock 80", but using modern tuning techniques, with new cam, ported heads etc, that will give a significant boost in performance.

Finally, you can simply replace your engine with a ready built crate motor. I now have an S&S 107", since replaced by S&S by their 111". Either will give you 100/100 or more (mine is 101/107). Any significant increase in torque will have other expenses, such as beefed up clutch, possibly bigger starter. I also replaced my primary chain and compensator with new ones.

Discuss!

Hallsville! I have a GF that lives on FM 449. Great roads down there compared to our northern potholed roads! Sorry for the hijack.

Default Zimm is 100% correct...

I am a proud recipient of both of those builds from Scott and let me tell you, you Will not be disappointed. I love the fact that I have the little engine that could.."I know I can, I know I can"

S&S Sidewinder Kit For 1984-1999 Big Twins – Made To Order

This 88, 96, 98, or 103 inch Sidewinder kit for 1984-1999 Harley-Davidson® Evolution® big twin models has been the basis for an S&S Hot Set Up Kit® in the past. Now it is available as a made to order kit that allows you to configure the kit to your specifications.

An S&S Sidewinder kit is one of the most popular and cost effective performance upgrades available for Harley-Davidson Evolution big twin engines. S&S Sidewinder top-end kits are available for owners of stock 80 inch engines and for engines already equipped with S&S 89 inch stock bore stroker kits. These top end kits yield 88 and 96 inch respectively, using the engine's existing flywheels. Stock 80 inch flywheels (4-1/4 inch stroke) must be rebalanced when installing the 88 inch top end kit, but the flywheels in an engine with an S&S 89 inch kit (4-5/8 inch stroke) do not require rebalancing when installing a 96 inch Sidewinder top-end kit. Stock crankcases must be bored to accept the big bore cylinders. We also offer Sidewinder kits with the correct stroke flywheels for 88, 96, 98, and 103 inch displacements. Complete instructions are included.

The S&S Hot Set Up Kit® has long been the industries first and foremost complete performance solution for a specific application. Each kit contained everything you need to get the job done. Now we have made it even better. Made to order kits allow you to choose as much or as little as you like to suit your performance goals and what you already have.

Basic Kit Contents:
The basis of this kit is a Sidewinder Kit that contains the following:
  • Big Bore Cylinder and Piston Kit
  • Flywheel Assembly for 96 98 and 103
In addition you can select the following items to complete your project:

  • Pushrods
  • Cam
  • Fuel System, Carb or EFI

Skip that idea and grab you a set of heads and pushrods and be done here.

I let it go this morning as I have two motors already for one scoot. A 113" and a 96" I just built last spring.

What's your budget?

I was looking at some Truett & Osborne flywheels the other day .... a bit of a steal at $285 ... 91” Stroker flywheel set; 4¾" stroke. Combine that with a Hillside special and you'll be over 100 and beating the S&S.

It's always a problem with these job ... where do you stop? A stroker has the advantage that you don't have to bore your case for a bigger bore ... but if you've stripped it down that far, why would not you?

But then the budget starts to rack up. Are Hillside's proven results not enough?

At 73,000, you're not going to get a lot for your old engine if you were to buy new and sell old ... but, on the the hand, you are sensibly faced with remanufacturing it all, i.e. renewing all the bearings and seals etc.

Is that what you plan to do?

Wow, $1,200 ... that's attractive.
