Default Questions about forks and lowers

Hi all

I've been shopping ebay, Craigslist and local swap meets for chrome fork lowers for my 99 Softail Custom. What forks and lowers will fit my bike?

I'm seeing a few Fat Boy fork sets for sale, as well as lowers from Heritages. These are all 41mm forks, but I know the lowers are different with the bikes that have Cow Bells. Would those upper forks even work? I think they use a different tripple tree.

Also, if I'm considering the idea of lowering the front end, is there short forks that would do the trick just in case I run into a set?

I could usre use some educating so I know when to jump on a good deal.

Thanks ahead for any and all help.

fyi, the lowers have nothing to do with your triple trees. Looking at the parts diagram at Ronnies for a 99 Softail Custom, your lower triple tree isn't designed to attach cowbells. (yours on the left)

All you should be watching for is 41 mm and are they single or dual rotor legs. A 41mm dual rotor set from a Electra/Street/Road glide would even fit, you'd simply not attach the 2nd caliper.

I found this. I thought Softail customs had narrower forks? I was wrong.

If you want to lower the front end (and I advise against it), use a lowering kit from someone like Progressive.

I think he's just looking for chrome sliders, not a lowering kit

Yes, just chrome sliders right now. But I have seen full sets being sold and I want to get the right parts if I trip on a really good deal.

We have a couple swap meets coming up and I kind want to have an idea of what I'm looking for. I'm already learning how FL forks are different from FX forks.

What is a fair price for chrome FX lowers?

Tough one. You always pay more for quality. As a reference I used a set of lowers off a friends Fatboy and had them chromed for $125. I know Harley used to charge big coin for lowers back when I bought mine in '98. If you go ebay I'd read all feedback.

I scored a set at Barnett's in El Paso 3 yrs ago for $40 in the outside parts area. Had about 30 sets lying around.. Picked up an oil cooler and thermostat brand new for $50 too. Lucky day..

I found a set on Craigslist for $160, but it looks like I can them for that price all day on Ebay. So I'm guessing I need to grab anything around $100.

Or I could wait for the $40 set. LOL

$40 already chromed that was a deal. Dealers do sell take offs as stated by Griz.
