You might want to look up something called "Target fixation".
What it basically says is that the more you focus on something to avoid it the greater the chance you have of hitting it.
Agreed - it's something novice riders can suffer from!

More than just the novices.
It applies to anybody that focuses on something to avoid it.

IMO the more crap you do to be noticed the greater chance you run of being hit.

All the emergency vehicles you see on the side of the road with all the lights flashing must have it all wrong, they should turn all their lights off so people won`t crash into them...

Funny you should mention that.

I was standing on top of a 70' utility pole while transferring fiber across I-35 in Dallas one night.
There was 5 cop cars waiting to close the interstate when we were ready to finish.
Yes they had their lights on and yes the last one in line got rear ended by a van going 70 mph.
No fatalitys but a couple of the cops did have to go to the hospital.

Their lights didn't do them much good.

And I am just giving them a try, who knows, they may be gone soon too.
It's just a personal preference. My tail lamp does have 7 bright LED's and a modulator.
Actually, if I could figure out a cool way to mount or french an pair of '59 Caddy taillights into my saddle bags, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
