Default 85 Evo Wide Glide shifter linkage length?

Upgrading my 85 Low Rider to forward controls, I figured this is the best way to start with the shifter linkage length. I'm talking about the shaft between the shifter connection and the trans linkage.

I want to do a mock up before paint and powder coat so I' like to have the shaft here instead of blocking the bike up for a week or so without a kickstand.

Also, will I have to change any of the trans linkage parts?

Thanks gents

The best way to start is to get the fwd controls, then see what you need. The set I got for my '85 FXEF came with the correct linkage, so I guess it depends on what set you buy.

Already have the forward controls, no shifter rod (from shifter pedal arm to trans linkage) or trans linkage included. I will be using the stock shifter linkage that's mounted to the trans if possible, I just didn't know if the trans mounted linkage was different for the forward controls than the mid shift trans mount linkage.

The arm that the shift pedal and the shifter rod bolts to is there and it's adjustable so I have some play room as far as length of the shift rod goes, I'm kind of just looking for a start point

I looked at the microfiche at Ronnies and it doesn't tell the length of the stock shifter rod, just shows a pic.

How long is your (shifter) rod?

Were you able to use your stock linkage off of the tranny or did you have to change out with parts in the kit"

there is no stock length for forward controls you will have to measure. most linkages will tell you min and max adjustment like 10.5"-12.5" my chopper has +1 forward controls and I needed 16.25" so I bought a 15"-!7" linkage.

85 four speeds came with 2 different linkages on the trans...supposedly an fx an fl but best I can tell they used whatever was available...my 84 softail had the fl linkage...the fx linkage in the top circle works best with forward controls.

OK, Thanks guys!

I have the FX linkage. I'll slap the mounting plate on for the shifter and get a length for the shifter rod.

Last resort I can make one up since most aftermarket ones seem to be chrome and I'm going with a blackout build.

NOTE: that trans linkage can't be changed with the inner primary on

Well if that's the case then you'll have no problem slapping on the control and pulling on the measuring tape.
