Check a parts manual for any `89 Big Twin, you will see a Butterfly carb with the old compliance fittings...

I bought my `89 Softail new in `89, and it had a Keihin Butterfly carb, which is still in my basement (the bike is still in the garage).
Probably me, I bought it "new" (like I said) off the showroom floor. Maybe Cal got diff carbs. This states prior to '89 http://www.harley-performance.com/cv-carburetor.html
It is possible it happen to mine! My best friend still owns his '89, I'll ask him what's on his, just for general knowledge.
Wish mine was still in the garage.

So I've been looking for a used CV carb online. Is there a certain model I should be looking for? manifold? I'd like to keep it as original and stock as possible. So I'd like to keep the choke on top of the tank, and will I need new throttle cables?

Thanks for everyones input and help on this. So I have a CV carb to replace the butterfly, judging by the model number; it's off a 96-97. Here's so my questions moving forward:

1. do I need to re-jet? (bike is all stock/factory besides carb update).
2. do I have to move the enricher/choke off the top of the tank?
2b. If I have to, doesn't anyone know the part number for the hardware?

I would fill the bowl with carb cleaner and work the throttle to see if he carb cleaner squirts into the carb throat, I'd do it 3 or 4 bowls full leave the bowl full to make sure nothing leaks out. Try to see if anything is leaking. If it is order a rebuild kit. if seems like it is not leaking i's put it on and see how it runs with the was it's jetted. not sure about the choke/enrichner, I believe the cable should go through under the tank, just above and behind the horn, I cant say for sure as I've never wrenched on a softail.

From this illustration you will need items 1,5,6,7,8,9 (buy items 1-8 from the dealer, find item 9 (manifold) on ebay.

This illustration below shows the backing plate, air filter and filter cover. You will find all of these parts on ebay, or you could use an aftermarket air filter system.

For the backing plate, a `90-`92 is preferable, because they would be a perfect fit, but a later model can be made to work very easily.

The difference is the later model parts are made for a different type breather configuration.

The enrichener cable will not run to the top, it will be routed to the left side of the bike near the horn. See item 34 in the above illustration.

OK, I've got everything I need either in house or on order. Believe it or not the hardest thing to find was a choke bracket and the EOM "Softail" ring for the air filter cover. Thank you to my new friends at Lone Star in Tyler TX who had the EOM ring, and is sending it up north. Now is a good time for any last minute advice, tips, or tricks while I wait for the parts to come in.
